Accreditation:  Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This course defines early childhood caries and addresses the prevalence, etiology, risk factors, and consequences of oral disease in children. Nurses will learn their role in preventing early childhood caries, and as a member of the care team, nurses will promote oral health in children.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Describe the prevalence, etiology, and consequences of early childhood caries
  2. Assess a child's risk of developing early childhood caries using a social-ecological model
  3. Determine child, family, and community influences on oral health of children
  4. Create and evaluate a plan for prevention addressing early assessment, oral hygiene, fluoride, dietary practices, and establishment of dental homes

Author Bio:

Susan Patton PhD, MHSA, CNS-BC
Dr. Patton has over 40 years of experience in direct patient care, academic leadership, healthcare administration, and community health research. She has a broad background in community health research with specific training in ethnographic and survey research. Significant scholarly accomplishments over the last five years are related to fall prevention in community dwelling older adults and promoting oral health in children and adults. These efforts have led to significant field research activities and extensive student involvement at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
